Words and Music: George Bennard
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suff'ring and shame;
And I love that old cross, where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
CHORUS
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down.
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.
O the old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.
In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see;
For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died
To pardon and sanctify me.
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true,
Its shame and reproach gladly bear.
Then He'll call me someday to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I'll share.
CHORUS
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down.
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it someday for a crown.
This one concentrates (obviously) more on what Jesus did for us at the cross. I wish it had a verse about Him raising from the dead. I'm a big fan of mentioning that every time His death is mentioned. :) (I guess it does say, "Then He'll call me someday to my home far away, where His glory forever I'll share." This indicates that He is alive and we are going to meet Him in the future!!)
This another one that I like for the words. I've never been a huge fan of this tune or the harmony that goes with it, but the words are really neat!
Madi, thank you do much for posting these hymns! It has been very encouraging for me to read them through, and remember the finished work of Christ on my behalf. Thank you for sharing!:)
